Brain fog and fatigue are symptoms of a sluggish metabolism and hypothyroidism (slow thyroid function.  The thyroid is in charge of metabolism).When you have a slow metabolism, your cells are not able to make energy as quickly.  Everything slows down.  That includes the cells in your brain.  And that leads to:
🧠brain fog,
🧠depression,
🧠memory problems,
🧠lack of motivation, and
🧠trouble concentrating.The solution?  Work on healing your metabolism!  Some ways to do that:
🌿eat enough and often enough,
🌿prioritize nutrient-dense foods,

Instead of masking your symptoms (fatigue or others) with caffeine, meds, or supplements, get to the root cause!Your body’s trying to tell you something.  Don’t just shove those symptoms down.  Listen to them, respect your body, and work on figuring out WHY you’re experiencing that fatigue.Have you been going, going, going, running on cortisol and adrenaline and not taking the time to decompress?Are you not giving your body enough fuel?  We need a balance of ALL macronutrients- carbs, protein, and fat as well as the micronutrients- vitamins & minerals.Are you getting enough sleep?Do you have a lot of toxins in your system - heavy metals, mold, chemicals in the products you’re using in your home, etc. and your body’s not detoxing properly?Do you have a slow metabolism and a slow thyroid (that’s actually still not the ROOT cause- it’s most likely because of one of the above👆)?You have fatigue for a reason. 1. Your current weight
2. Your height
3. Your daily activity level
4. Your stress level
5. Your metabolism
6. Whether or not you’re pregnant or breastfeeding
7.  Your goalEveryone is unique and requires a different number of calories.But many women are actually UNDER eating - even if they’re not losing weight or are staying the same.And that leads to a slow metabolism.  If your metabolism is running slow, that means you’re burning less calories at rest.  You require less calories to stay alive and function at that level.  Although “that level” is not optimal.Instead of lowering and lowering your calories to chase after weight loss, lets raise those calories and shoot for an actual healthy metabolism that burns more calories at rest.  A metabolism that makes you feel alive and energized. One that actually gives you more energy to move and exercise without feeling fatigue for days later.⚡️Let’s focus on nourishing our bodies and giving it the nutrients it needs to thrive, instead of restricting it into submission.So, what’s a healthy number of calories to shoot for?Most women need 1800-2400 calories depending on the factors above.  My goal is currently to hit 2000 calories.Track your calories for a few days and see where you fall.  Are you eating enough calories to fuel your metabolism?If not, slowly make adjustments to make sure you are eating enough food.Whatever you do, please do not eat 1200 or 1400 calories.  That’s what a 4 year old should be eating. Vitamin A. It’s a super important nutrient to g Vitamin A.  It’s a super important nutrient to get in your diet if you want a healthy metabolism and good energy!We can get Vitamin A in the form Beta-Carotene from plants like carrots, but the BEST form of Vitamin A is retinol.  And that’s found only in animal products.Retinol is MUCH more bioavailable, or easier for our body to use.  It takes about 12 units of beta carotene to convert into 1 unit of retinol.  And that’s in a healthy person with a good functioning metabolism.  If your thyroid is running slow, that conversion rate is gonna be even less.I shared a few posts back about how, if you have fatigue, you most likely don’t have anemia.  It’s most likely unregulated iron.In order for iron to function like it’s supposed to and carry oxygen so that the oxygen can be used to make energy, it has to be regulated by copper.But in order for copper to do that, it has to be made bioavailable. Most people with “low iron” on bloodwork actually have DYSREGULATED iron, or iron that’s STUCK in their tissues.This OVERLOAD of iron in the tissue causes the same symptoms of “anemia,” including fatigue.So, it’s important to get to the root and get iron regulated and circulating through the blood like like it’s supposed to.And how do we do that?With two VERY important nutrients:
Copper & Vitamin ACopper activates oxygen and gets it ready for iron to carry.  Copper is like the “chef” in the kitchen preparing oxygen and iron is like the “waiter” carrying it through the blood.Iron is usually seen as the ✨star✨ in the whole oxygen/energy show.  But the real star is COPPER.Without copper, iron builds up in the tissues and reacts with oxygen, basically turning it into rust.So, we need copper!But in order for copper to work, it needs bioavailable Vitamin A, aka Retinol. Have you been told you have low iron or iron-defic Have you been told you have low iron or iron-deficiency anemia?If you tell your doctor you’ve been having a lot of fatigue, most likely they will test your ferritin (a blood protein containing iron). If it’s low, they may tell you that you have anemia and give you an iron supplement. 😢The problem is, you most likely DON’T have low iron, but iron DYSREGULATION.  You have low iron in the blood and TOO MUCH iron in the wrong place.  It’s stuck in the tissues and not available to use.It is VERY unlikely that you actually have low iron in your body.  Iron is one of the most abundant minerals on Earth.  About 35% of the Earth’s mass is iron.  PLUS, many foods are fortified with iron these days.  Since the 1930s iron has been added to foods like cereal, bread, and pasta.Also - the body recycles iron.  A system in our body called the RES (when it’s working properly) recycles 24 mg of stored iron EVERY DAY.  We need 25 mg of iron daily to function.  So, that means we only need to get in an additional 1 mg through food a day.  That’s super easy to do if you eat meat.  So, unless you’re a vegan, there’s a slim chance you actually have anemia.So, why is iron stuck in our tissues and not recycling like it should be?  Because of a lack of OTHER nutrients to tell iron what to do.To get to the root cause of “anemia” we can’t just supplement with iron. Vitamins and minerals work TOGETHER. If we supplement with one, it affects others. You might scroll and see the dangers of eating red meat based on such-and-such studies one second and the benefits of meat the next.There’s research and studies in favor of both sides of many arguments.  So, how do you know what to believe?My advice - use some common sense, study a little bit about human physiology, ask yourself if this aligns with and supports what goes on in the body, and listen to your body.I’m not saying don’t believe any studies, but research and what’s been “proven” in studies to be healthy is ONE piece of the puzzle.  What’s more important is how YOU actually feel when you eat certain foods or do certain things.Studies are not perfect and many are biased and flawed. For example, many are funded by the same companies that will benefit from people buying their product, medication, food, supplement, etc. once it’s been “proven” to work.  Many studies are done on animals instead of people, or men instead of women (which are very different physiologically).One example of a flawed study that has had huge detrimental effects is the 7 Country Study, where this man named Ancel Keys studied the diet in 22 countries to prove that saturated fat causes heart disease.  Only 7 countries fit his narrative, so he left the other 15 countries out.
